Nomo Myth Series Pt.2: Cosmic Duality and the Law of Balance
🧬 The Myth: The Twin Nomo and the Fall Into Chaos
In this article, we dive deeper into the myth of the twin Nomo beings as presented by Baba Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa in Indaba, My Children. And other authors on the subject. According to Mutwa and others, the twin Nomo beings are often linked to fundamental cosmological concepts, representing the dual forces that shape the universe and human existence.
According to others who spoke with the Dogon bantu:
In Dogon cosmology, the original Nomo were twin beings—primordial, androgynous entities created by Amma, the supreme mother deity. These twin Nomo were meant to descend to Earth in balance and harmony, establishing divine order through law, rhythm, and sacred knowledge. But one of the twins rebelled, breaking cosmic law, descending prematurely, and disrupting the divine harmony. This act shattered the original unity and introduced chaos, fragmentation, and imbalance into the world. To restore balance, Amma sacrificed another Nomo and spread his body across the universe, purifying creation and re-establishing cosmic rhythm.
It is important for the bantu seeker to note that this myth is not about violence—it’s a metaphor/Allegory for:
The duality of masculine and feminine
The loss of divine balance in humanity
The split between the conscious and unconscious self
Please do get copies of these books for yourself, seeker, or dig a little deeper about how Mutwa describes the twin Nomo beings as “the two divine forces that are inseparable”, often depicted in myth as “two halves of a whole”—each holding a piece of the divine puzzle that sustains the universe.
I want to compare the Twin archetype to other myths across the world to find similarities and demonstrate the connectedness of Bantu all over the world.
| Culture / Tradition | Twin Symbolism |
|---|---|
| Kemet (Ancient Egypt) | Shu & Tefnut – Air and moisture, balance of atmosphere and creation |
| Yoruba (Ancient West Africa) | Ibeji twins – Sacred twins of duality, fertility, divine protection |
| Biblical/Christian (Modern Europe & Americas) | Cain and Abel – Archetype of broken brotherhood and separation from divine will |
| Sumerian (Modern middle east, south America) | Enki and Enlil – Wisdom and law, freshwater and wind, often in cosmic tension |
| Vedic (Ancient India) | Ashwini twins – Twin horsemen, healers, messengers of the gods |
| Hebrew/Kabbalistic (Modern Judaism) | Boaz and Jachin – Twin pillars of Solomon’s Temple; strength and stability; masculine/feminine forces guarding the gateway to divine mystery |
| Dogon | Twin Nomo – Cosmic amphibious beings, balance and disruption, law and restoration |
| Norse Mythology | Odin’s Ravens (Huginn & Muninn) – Thought and memory; dual aspects of perception |
| Gnostic texts | Christ and Sophia – Divine logos (word) and wisdom, masculine and feminine Christ consciousness |
| Masonic/Occult | Boaz and Jachin (again) – Dual pillars in esoteric tradition, representing duality in initiation, polarity at the gateway to higher knowledge |
| Nguni Cosmology | Female and male ancestral energies – Twin creative forces encoded in clan structures, naming systems, and ancestral memory |
As we can see, there are many other mythologies that we have not included in this list, but we are able to see the similarities. Let us unlock and take a Deeper look at one of the more well-known stories in the bible; The building of Solomon’s Temple, in there. Boaz and Jachin were not just architectural elements—they were living symbols:
- Boaz (on the left) = “In strength” is the Pillar of form, stability, often associated with the feminine in mystical systems
- Jachin (on the right) = “He will establish” is the Pillar of force, motion, aligned with masculine energy
Together, they guard the entrance to sacred space, just as the twin Nomo represent the threshold between heaven and Earth, or the initiation of chaos into balance.
These twin pillars are also mirrored in:
- Deoxyribonucleic acid/DNA helixes (twin strands)
- The Tree of Life in Kemet and in the Kabalah (left and right pillars: Severity and Mercy)
- The lunar and solar currents in yogic nadis (Ida and Pingala)
Now that we know about the duality that we all have within us 🌗 let us see what we can do to raise ourselves up as our ancestors.
Across the sacred myths—Nomo twins, Boaz and Jachin, Enki and Enlil, Cain and Abel—duality is the stage upon which consciousness unfolds.
But the wise know this: “duality is not the enemy of truth. It is the initiation chamber for it.” (I’m not sure who said that)
Step 1: Recognise Duality as a Mirror, Not a Battle
We tend to think of opposites as enemies:
- Light vs. Dark
- Good vs. Evil
- Masculine vs. Feminine
- Spirit vs. Flesh
But in sacred Bantu traditions, these are complementary currents, not contradictions. If anything, the feminine gives birth to its light, which is the masculine. In the Dogon system, for instance, the split of the twin Nomo was tragic, but it also initiated the creation of the world. The division was the womb of diversity. In other words, let us learn to harmonise the twin energies that make up the whole of who we are through the divisions of personalities we call the zodiac.
We don’t blend energy, we harmonise it – Sistar Myrah said that!
Step 2: Anchor in the Third Force — the Unity Behind the Two
Every sacred system has a third principle that unites duality:
- In Kabbalah, the Middle Pillar of equilibrium between Mercy and Severity.
- In Taoism, the Tao is not Yin or Yang—but the eternal mystery that contains them both
- In Dogon myth, Amma is the still point, the source from which all polarity emerges
- In Christianity, the Holy Spirit is neither Father nor Son, but the breath that unites
This is how Bantu soul reclaims its throne: by remembering it was never truly divided. But by first acknowledging the feminine and musculine within ourselves.
