How did they take over the world?
The Doctrine of Discovery

This is the historical starting point for the change. The Doctrine of Discovery specifically targeted these non-Christian peoples. It was the legal and religious dogma that declared their lands “vacant” and available for the taking by Christian European powers. This historical doctrine legally stripped the indigenous people of their inherent rights to their own land in the eyes of the colonisers.

Innerstanding how control was established and maintained:

  • The Land as an Estate: The vast territories of the “copper colored people” were legally re-framed as a massive Estate or Trust.

  • The Government as Executor: The newly formed Nation-States (like the United States or Canada) appointed themselves as the Executor or Trustee of this massive estate.

  • From Owners to Beneficiaries/Debtors: The indigenous people, who were once the sovereign owners, were legally demoted to the status of beneficiaries or “wards” of the state. In this new trust relationship, the government (the Creditor) managed the resources, and the native people were placed in the position of dependents or Debtors, reliant on the executor for their own property. This is the foundation of the reservation system.

The Ancestral Return

You reconnecting with the ancestors — known and unknown. Symbols begin to make sense. Dreams intensify. You feel the presence of those who came before.

Note: Christian hegemony refers to the normalisation and institutionalisation of Christian values, beliefs, and practices, so that they become the assumed standard for society. It is more than religious privilege; it’s a systemic dominance that shapes the culture, language, laws, and institutions in ways that benefit Christians, even non-practising ones, while marginalising and oppressing non-Christians. 
 

Key aspects of Christian hegemony:

  • Privilege: Christians often receive unearned advantages. For example, major Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter are federal holidays, while religious holidays for other faiths are not. Wearing Christian symbols is considered normal, while the symbols of other religions may be viewed with suspicion.
  • Invisibility: For those within the dominant culture, Christian hegemony is often invisible. Its influence is mistaken for secularism or “just the way things are”.
  • Proselytization: Even well-meaning attempts at conversion or proselytizing from a position of power can be experienced by non-Christians as an imposition or a form of oppression.
  • Framing of knowledge: In some cases, the Christian narrative is so pervasive that it even shapes academic fields, including religious studies, where the majority of scholars may come from a Christian background.
