Nomo Myth Series pt.1: AbaNomo: Star Beings of Sirius and the Water of Creation

“Return of the Waters of the Stars: The Hidden Origins of the Bantu Soul”

Another great series on our Bantu story, let’s discuss our ancestors, abaNomo. Across the ancient lands of the earth, long before colonial tongues, regions and imported gods, a group of Bantu known today as the Dogon bantu of Mali were told to be the last group to have preserved a bantu secret—a cosmic memory whispered across time by elders. They spoke of beings from the stars, the Nomo, amphibious beings from the Sirius star system, who came to Earth in a spinning ark to restore order, teach the sacred sciences, and awaken the divine memory of the people.

A great teacher of ours iSanusi ubaba Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa, tells tales about these ancient ancestors in great detail in his book “Indaba, My Children” in 1964. In the book, he describes the Nomo as a mystical or spiritual entity, often related to water and the unseen world. Viewing them as beings or forces connected with the water spirits, which is a recurring theme in his descriptions of indigenous Bantu spirituality.

These stories may be myths, but they are keys to unlocking our memory, to sovereignty, to the Bantu soul’s forgotten place in the stars and the earth.

In this series, we dive deep into the myth of the Nomo—not just as another our-story lesson, but as a blueprint for spiritual reawakening. It is time for bantu, and all children of the cosmic mother, to remember what history, colonialism, and/or time erased. Let’s go in:

Arrival from the Sirius Star System

Dogon elders spoke of Sirius A, Sirius B, describing B as a dense, invisible companion star. The beings called the Nomo came from this star system. The Nomo are described as: Amphibious, fish-like beings, Masters of water, order, and spiritual technology, Bearers of language, agriculture, and cosmology, The original bringers of civilisation. The Nomo descended to Earth in a vessel that spun and landed with great wind, often interpreted as a spaceship or celestial ark. Upon arrival, they restored balance to a chaotic Earth.

Before we move on, let’s look at the information on the ancestors and break it down symbolically.

🜄 Symbolic perspective of Nomo

Nomo ElementEsoteric Interpretation
Water beingsPrimordial consciousness; emotional and psychic intelligence
From Sirius BOriginating from hidden wisdom or a “spiritual sun” beyond the visible
Duality of Nomo (often twins)Balancing opposites: feminine/masculine, chaos/order, spirit/matter
Descending in a vesselIncarnation of divine knowledge into the material plane/ The fall of divine beings.
Language and farming giftsSeeding of sacred word and rulership of Earth

Here’s something I found interesting when looking at Parallels in Other Myth Systems;

  • Like Oannes (Babylonian fish-being) who brought wisdom from the sea
  • Like Enki, the Sumerian god of water and DNA
  • Like Nommo twins in Dogon lore, echoing the Egyptian Shu and Tefnut, born of divine breath and water

These beings may represent a shared memory of aquatic cosmic teachers across bantu cultures all over the world.

So they come from SIRIUS. What do we/they know about this star system?

Sirius isn’t just a star. It is a portal, a teacher, a sun, and a clock built into the cosmos.
The Nomo used it to anchor heaven on Earth.

And how does the Dogon track the position of the star?

Sirius in Bantu Timekeeping & Ritual

The rising of Sirius, known as the “Sigi Tolo” in Dogon language, marks sacred timings:

  • Agricultural cycles
  • Ceremonial calendars
  • Astronomical initiations
  • The 60-year Sigi ceremony, which realigns Dogon cosmology with the Sirius system. (Every 60 years, this ceremony takes place)

It is important for the seeker to take this information further to do personal, individual studies on the Sirius connection with Dogon and Nomo.

We can trace this story across different cultures in the world. Here’s a small example:

CultureSirius Connection
Kemet (Ancient Egypt)Sirius (Sopdet) is linked to the Nile flood and Isis/Aset for fertility, rebirth
Nguni (Modern Southern Africa)Belief in sky beings from “the Dog Star” or inje bomvu.
Yoruba (Modern West Africa)Orisha systems include Oshun and Olokun, linked to cosmic waters
General Bantu Cosmology from all over the world.Spirit arrives through the stars and returns to them after death.

What do other authors say about the mystery? Let’s look at a few examples that we could use as a guideline for remembering the Nomo.

In The Sirius Mystery, Robert K. G. Temple primarily focuses on the ancient Egyptian and Dogon cultures. Temple discusses how the Dogon possess detailed astronomical knowledge about Sirius and its companion star, which some researchers believe they could only have known through contact with extraterrestrial visitors or advanced ancient knowledge. The book delves into the similarities between the astronomical myths and stories of the Dogon and the advanced astronomical understanding attributed to ancient Egypt. The Dogon bantu who are a community noted for their sophisticated knowledge of Sirius, which is central to their myths and cosmology, and Ancient Egypt as a civilisation with advanced astronomical and mythological traditions.

The book is worth a read, BUT it is important to note to the seeker that the author and others may have also projected their limitations on abantu because they said that for the Dogon to have knowledge of Sirius B’s existence and characteristics, they could not have derived without outside influence, submitting this as evidence of ancient contact with advanced aliens.

In Indaba, My Children, Vusamazulu C. Mutwa portrays the Nomo as the ultimate divine force—creator, source of life, and the sacred presence that underpins Nguni/Zulu spirituality. It symbolises the divine mystery and the spiritual authority that guides and sustains the universe.

In conclusion, let us look at the symbolic insights we get from studying the story of abaNomo.

Important to note: Sirius B acts like an etheric sun, guiding soul memory. The Dogon say it is the true origin of life, beyond the sun we see.
